Medical Alert Service Dogs

Our Medical Alert Service Dog program is designed for individuals who need reliable, task-trained support for complex medical conditions. These dogs are trained not only to respond to medical events, but in many cases to detect subtle physiological changes before an episode occurs, allowing for early intervention and increased independence.

We specialize in training dogs for the following medical alert needs:

Seizure Alert & Response

We train dogs to both alert to and respond during seizure activity. Alerts may include behavior changes such as pawing, nudging, or persistent attention-seeking prior to an episode. Response tasks can include staying with the handler, providing grounding pressure, alerting others, or retrieving emergency items. It is important to note that not all dogs have the natural ability to detect seizures. We utilize Labrador Retrievers and conduct extensive evaluation and scent testing to ensure each dog has the capability before advancing in this training.

POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) Alert

Dogs are trained to recognize changes in heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels associated with POTS episodes. Alerts are given prior to or during symptom onset, allowing the handler time to sit, stabilize, or take preventative measures. Response behaviors can include retrieving water, medication, or providing Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT) to assist with regulation.

Diabetic Alert

Our dogs are trained in scent detection to identify changes in blood sugar levels, both high and low. Through consistent imprinting and proofing, dogs learn to alert their handler before levels become dangerous. This allows for faster correction and improved overall management of diabetes.

Food Allergy Detection

For individuals with severe or life-threatening allergies, our dogs are trained to detect specific allergens through scent work. This can include identifying the presence of allergens in food or on surfaces. Alerts provide an added layer of safety and confidence in daily life, especially in public or travel settings.
