Heat conditioning is something I start every year as the weather begins warming up here in Georgia ☀️

This is something I do with my personal dogs every year and also with the dogs that are with us in training during the warmer months.

The biggest thing to understand is this:
heat conditioning is NOT about pushing dogs in the heat.

It’s about helping dogs gradually and safely acclimate so they can better tolerate warmer temperatures over time.

For us, that can look like:
• short play sessions
• being outside while I’m doing yard work
• settling on place in the shade
• cooling off with water or kiddie pools if needed

We always start with short sessions first and slowly build up.

A huge part of this is also knowing when your dog is too hot. Before trying any heat conditioning, you should know the signs of heat stress and heat stroke.

Atlas came with Alyssa to a horse show this weekend and got to experience a little bit of everything. From staying with her at an Airbnb, between classes to spending time at the show grounds, he handled the busy environment really well. He settled nicely in the tack stall in his portable kennel and relaxed while all the horses, people, and activity were going on around him.

He also got to tag along to restaurants and pretty much everywhere we went throughout the weekend. One of his favorite parts was getting to run next to the golf cart, which he absolutely loves and always gets excited for.

On top of that, we worked through a few of his mobility and anxiety related tasks in new environments and he did a great job staying focused and working through everything. Overall, Atlas was such a good boy this weekend and continues to show how capable and steady he is becoming. 🐶💜

While the need for support is real and valid, the timeline many expect does not align with what it actually takes to produce a reliable, ethical, and truly functional service dog.

A service dog is not simply taught a list of tasks and then cleared for public access. A professionally trained, owner-handled service dog is built through time, consistency, exposure, and intentional handler education. These dogs must develop emotional stability, confidence, neutrality around the public, and the ability to perform complex tasks in real-world environments under pressure. None of that happens overnight.

Equally important, the handler must be trained alongside the dog. A service dog team succeeds when the human understands timing, reinforcement, accountability, body language, and how to advocate for their dog in public spaces. Rushing the process often leads to gaps in training, increased stress on the dog, and long-term issues that could have been prevented with proper pacing.

Ethical service dog training prioritizes the dog’s mental and physical well-being, not speed. It allows for foundational skills to be solid, public access to be carefully proofed, and tasks to be generalized across environments. It also allows space for setbacks, growth periods, and maturity. You may hear the term balanced trainer used a lot, but we want to take a moment to explain what that looks like in real life and why it is the approach both Zach and I follow in our training.

Balanced training for Purple Pups ATL means we use both motivation (positive reinforcement) and accountability (Negative reinforcement)to help dogs clearly understand what is being asked of them. Just like people, dogs learn best when expectations are fair, consistent, and clearly communicated.

Here is a real-world example:

If we are teaching a dog to sit, we start by showing them how. We use food, praise, and repetition to build understanding. Once the dog clearly knows the command, we then hold them accountable for following through. That accountability might look like gentle leash pressure or structured guidance, followed immediately by praise the moment they make the correct choice.

This is the same way dogs naturally learn from each other. A mother dog encourages desired behavior but also corrects behavior that is unsafe or inappropriate. The correction is not emotional or harsh, it is clear, timely, and fair.

Balanced training is not about punishment or fear. It is about:
• Teaching first
• Communicating clearly
• Reinforcing good choices
• Providing guidance when a dog makes the wrong choice

We use positive reinforcement every single day. We also believe that once a dog understands a command, it is our responsibility to give them structure and consistency so they can succeed in the real world, not just in a quiet living room with treats in our hands.

This approach creates dogs who are confident, reliable, and able to make good decisions in everyday life. It also helps owners feel supported and empowered instead of frustrated or confused.

This is the balanced training philosophy that both Zach and I stand behind, and it is what we use with every dog that comes into our program.

Let’s talk about a breed that has completely stolen my heart—the Poodle. Yes—fluffy, elegant, and often rocking a stylish haircut—but beneath all that glam is one of the smartest, sweetest, and most trainable dogs I’ve had the pleasure of working with.

As a professional dog trainer, I highly recommend poodles to families, service dog prospects, and even first-time dog owners. Here’s why:

Incredible Intelligence
Poodles are exceptionally smart. They pick up new commands quickly and are always eager to engage. Their ability to learn and retain information makes them ideal for everything from basic obedience to complex service work.

Loyal and Emotionally Attuned

While today is full of fun, food, and fireworks, it can be overwhelming—or even dangerous—for our four-legged friends. Here are a few important safety tips to help keep your dog calm and secure during the celebrations:

1. Keep Dogs Indoors During Fireworks
Even the most confident dogs can be startled by loud noises. Set up a cozy, quiet space inside where your pup feels safe. Use white noise, calming music, or the TV to help muffle sounds from outside.

2. Update ID Tags and Microchips
July 4th is one of the top days for lost dogs. Make sure your dog is wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags, and double-check that their microchip information is current—just in case.

3. Avoid Fireworks and Sparklers Near Pets
Not only can they be scary, but fireworks can also be dangerous. Keep dogs away from any open flames, fireworks, or sparklers to prevent burns or accidents.

4. Provide Enrichment and Exercise Early in the Day
Give your dog a walk, some playtime, or a training session earlier in the day to burn off extra energy. A tired dog is more likely to rest through the noise and chaos later.
